Living room

The brief from the client for this spacious sitting room was to create a light, airy, comfortable space, with areas for specific functions.

The room was a great size, measuring 27 ft long by 18 ft, with a tall bay sash window at the far end and a high ceiling. After stripping it out, the floor was covered with a dark grey poured rubber. The client didn't want carpet, preferring a more modern material offering a seamless finish. The walls were re-plastered and painted and modern uplighters installed high on the walls on either side of the bay window.

The client wanted to be able to eat and entertain, have his home office and a comfortable seating area in which to watch TV and listen to music. This was possible because of the size of the room. I mentally divided it in half, assigning the left-hand side as the living area. I chose a modular seating system, a Marcel Breuer Wassily chair and designed a large bespoke storage unit.

At the top end of the room I chose a very large rectangular dining table that easily seats eight, while facing it on the right-hand side I created a home office space. To finish the look I sourced modern abstract canvases.
